Director, Finance and Administration

Position: Director of Finance and Administration Team: Finance and Administration Reports to: Chief Financial Officer Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA The Global FoodBanking Network is an international non-profit organization that nourishes the world’s hungry through uniting and advancing food banks in more than 30 countries. GFN focuses on combating hunger and preventing food waste by providing expertise, directing resources, sharing knowledge and developing connections that increase efficiency, ensure food safety and reach more people facing hunger. Last year, 943 GFN member food banks rescued over 500 million kilograms of food and grocery product and redirected it to feed 9.6 million people through a network of more than 55,000 social service and community-based organizations. As GFN moves into its second decade, it has an ambitious vision to help enable its members to materially increase the amount of food distributed to those in need, distribute more nutrient-rich foods, and strengthen the resilience of their communities. Summary: The Director of Finance & Administration reporting to the CFO, is the expert accountant in the financial operations GFN to ensure the accuracy and usability of the organization’s financial records. He or she plays a key role on Finance and Administration team as it supports the mission and overall strategic objectives of GFN. Success in this role requires highly developed skills of analysis, the ability to maintain focus in a busy office, problem solving, and service orientation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Finance and Accounting
  • Serve as GFN’s primary in-house accountant, working with the CFO and constituents throughout the organization to ensure that GFN’s accounting records are timely, accurate and in compliance with GAAP, and processes have appropriate controls in place.
  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department to include: reconcile and close books on a monthly basis:, prepare and review journal entries, accounts payable/receivable, revenues and expenses, analyze accounts.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely information for budget monitoring and progress reporting of programs and grants.
  • Analyze data and prepare a full set of monthly internal financial statements in the required format and within the required time frames.
  • Flag, investigate and discuss unusual transactions with the CFO or other relevant staff.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting, working with departments and other managers to provide budget information and assistance in developing both detailed and summary budgets.
  • Responsible for preparation and distribution of monthly department budget reports, and answering questions about those reports.
  • Update and enforce proper accounting methods, policies and procedures. Ensureinternal controls and segregation of duties.
  • Work closely with the CFO on strategic financial reporting issues and analysis.
  • Responsible for preparation and successful completion of the annual financial audit and Form 990.
  • Serve as the department’s expert on its accounting software and work with other staff to enhance their productivity in Excel.
  • Manage banking relationships
  • Stay current on financial, tax and other legal issues that may affect GFN.
Administration/Human Resources
  • Establish and manage an effective working office to foster a productive work environment.
  • Work with building management to accomplish such goals.
  • Manage all procurement activities.
  • Process semi-monthly payroll.
  • Manage new hire onboarding process.
  • Ensure accuracy of PTO requests, calendar and employee logs.
Other duties as assigned. Candidate Profile:
  • BA/BS in accounting, business administration, or other relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Four years of senior accounting/financial analysis experience, with the two most recent years being in a nonprofit social service organization.
  • Advanced digital literacy, advanced excel, proficiency in MS Office Suite, financial system database, internet-based applications, Google Drive, etc.
  • Knowledge of current accounting rules and regulations as they apply to nonprofit organizations (GAAP), including monthly and annual closings
  • Experience reporting to and supporting a CFO or other similar senior professional.
  • Experience with Quick Books Online
  • Ability to effectively direct and supervise.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Seven or more years of senior accounting experience.
  • Experience with other nonprofit software packages.
  • Experience in public accounting, particularly auditing.
  • CPA certification.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of internal control and compliance assurance processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact with staff at all levels and with external contacts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Organizational skills, ability to meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
