Food Banks Fill The Blanks

Food banks are experts in recovering and distributing food to people

facing hunger–but that’s not all. The food bank model can help fill the blanks

for solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges, like climate change,

food insecurity, the cost-of-living crisis, malnutrition, and more.

This year, for International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

(September 29) and World Food Day (October 16), GFN will shine a light

on the different ways that food banks fill in the blanks.

When community agencies receive food from a food bank, it means they can focus more of their resources on its specialized services.Take Nuestra Sagrada Familia for instance.Based in Guatemala City, the organization provides child care, education, and feeding programs to more than 60 economically disadvantaged families and 550 children.GFN member food bank Desarrollo en Movimiento Guatemala provides the center with a variety of food, including fresh produce and grains, that are packaged into monthly food kits for each family.Partnerships like these help organizations like Nuestra Sagrada Familia focus on its childcare program while ensuring the entire family has access to the food they need. 💛Photos: The Global FoodBanking Network/Claudio Vasquez Bianchi ... What's so great about black beans? We're glad you What's so great about black beans? We're glad you asked...

Like all beans, they're good for the planet, our health, and improving food security.

In fact, black beans are especially climate-friendly because growing them uses very little air, water, land, and soil.

In Mexico, GFN member food bank @RedBAMX uses black beans in its Comer en Familia program.

The program pairs cooking workshops and recipes with the food packages it provides to communities across the country. BAMX uses black beans in tons of recipes including salads, soups, and sandwiches.

Do you have a favorite black bean dish? Share it in the comments!

In Honduras, a healthy meal might include rice, be In Honduras, a healthy meal might include rice, beans, and eggs with a corn tortilla and tomato salad or chicken stew with rice and vegetables.

But, like many places around the world, people in Honduras are finding it harder to access nutritious food.

"Availability and access to food has been reduced due to the pandemic, increasing costs to produce food, and fuel prices," said Eduardo Andrade, social management and nutrition coordinator at @bancodealimentoshn, "But we have many programs that [can help.]"

The food bank's Nourishing Hearts program provides community members with nutrition evaluations and education on better eating habits.

They also partner with schools to deliver healthy lunches. These daily lunches can make a big different in a child's life today and for the rest of their lives through improved health, school attendance, and academic performance.

This weekend, as many countries celebrate Mother's This weekend, as many countries celebrate Mother's Day, we're reminded of the different ways that food banks and their partner organizations support the unique needs of women and mothers.💜

These are just a few:

➡ @lagosfoodbank NUMEPLAN helps improve nutrition and food intake for expecting and new mothers.

➡ @redbamx Comer en la Familia provides cooking workshops that focus on affordable, nutritious, and locally sourced food.

➡ @kecharasoupkitchensociety Empowerment Program provides baking and sewing skills training and employment opportunities for local women.

Wishing you a happy Mother's Day! 💛
What’s so great about the navy bean? Like all What’s so great about the navy bean?

Like all beans, they’re good for people and the planet!

GFN member @leket_israel is helping people eat more delicious and nutritious navy beans by using them in its pre-packaged soups.

The soups are made using surplus produce and are easy to heat up at home.

Over 18 months, Leket Israel distributed 22,518 pints of bean soups to people facing hunger! 🍲

Tell us, do you have a favorite recipe that uses navy beans (also known as white beans or Boston beans)?

What happens to all of the extra food at restauran What happens to all of the extra food at restaurants and hotels?

According to the United Nations, 7 percent of all food produced worldwide is wasted at the food service and retail levels.

@RedBAMX is doing something about that and making sure that surplus prepared food from the hospitality industry is making it to our plates.

The food bank's Al Rescate program is a collaboration with over 12 hotel groups and 50 restaurants across Mexico.

Since 2014, BAMX has been collecting surplus foods from hospitality buffet lines, and meal service, to name a few.

By recovering surplus prepared foods, BAMX has not only provided nearly 250,000 wholesome meals but prevented significant greenhouse gas emissions!

Can beans help sustainably alleviate hunger?🤔

Yes! Beans may be small, but they can make a huge impact on our health, the planet, and food security. It’s no wonder that food banks are using them in a variety of ways!

As climate change impacts the way we grow and acce As climate change impacts the way we grow and access food, local food banks are responding. ⤵️

@Leket_Israel recovers surplus produce from an extensive network of over 700 farmers and packhouses.

In 2022, the food bank recovered 26,500 tons of fresh produce, with the help of an app they developed where farmers alert Leket when there is surplus produce available for recovery.

But, climate change is affecting agricultural productivity and harvest patterns, so to refine their food recovery operations and ensure as little food is lost in the fields as possible, Leket is developing a satellite technology software program to identify when agricultural fields are ripe for harvest and plan food recovery efforts accordingly.

One-third of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by our food systems.

That’s right — climate change and the way we grow and access food deeply affect the other.

Our food systems contribute to climate change. Meanwhile, as climate change worsens, it gets harder to grow and access the food we need.

But, locally led food banks are doing something about it!
