Best-by? Use-by? Sell-by? If you’re confused by these labels, the good news is that you’re not alone.

The bad news? It causes tons of good food to go to waste where it ultimately contributes to climate change and food insecurity.

It’s true, most food date labels don’t indicat It’s true, most food date labels don’t indicate food safety but quality and freshness.

And every time we throw away that unopened bag of lettuce, mostly full milk container, or slightly brown bananas, we’re producing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change and food insecurity.

Here are a few things we can all do:

1. Advocate for better food date label policies and laws that standardize labels and allow food past its quality-date to be donated.

2. Work on reducing your own food waste at home. See a “Best if used by” date label? While the product might not taste as fresh, it’s often perfectly safe to eat.

3. Donate to your local food bank! Find out which food products are in high demand and check their donation safety requirements.

When community agencies receive food from a food b When community agencies receive food from a food bank, it means they can focus more of their resources on its specialized services.

Take @nuestrasagradafamilia for instance.

Based in Guatemala City, the organization provides child care, education, and feeding programs to more than 60 economically disadvantaged families and 550 children.

GFN member food bank @dmovimiento.gt provides the center with a variety of food, including fresh produce and grains, that are packaged into monthly food kits for each family.

Partnerships like these help organizations like Nuestra Sagrada Familia focus on its childcare program while ensuring the entire family has access to the food they need. 💛

In South Africa, blackouts, inflation, and the eff In South Africa, blackouts, inflation, and the effects of the pandemic are all making it harder for families to put nutritious food on the table.

As many turn to food banks and community agencies for help, food banks like GFN member @FoodForwardSA (FFSA) are also experiencing a unique set of challenges.

Load shedding, when power is cut due to lack of supply, is also making it "more logistically challenging to recover and store perishable and nutritious foods like fruit and vegetables," said Deirdre Adams, fund development manager at FFSA

Even with these challenges, FFSA continues to show up for its communities. In May, the food bank launched a new program focused on mitigating poor nutritional outcomes in pregnant mothers and young children.

Do you call it a chickpea or garbanzo bean?   Eit Do you call it a chickpea or garbanzo bean?

Either way, this bean is packed with protein and they’re especially good at producing nitrogen in soils, which other plan can then use.

And like all beans, they’re good for the planet, our health, and improving food security.

Through food recovery and sharing easy, affordable recipes, food banks around the world are helping more people eat beans, like chickpeas.

Check out @fareshareuk’s recipes with @fulltimemeals for chickpea dishes like Moroccan-style stew and sweet potato curry.
