Director, Human Resources

 Position:                        Director, Human Resources Team:                              Administration Reports to:                     Chief Financial Officer Location:                        Chicago, Illinois, USA The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) seeks to nourish the world’s hungry through uniting and advancing food banks.  Founded in 2006, GFN connects food banking organizations in more than 40 countries that together serve more than 16.9 million people annually. The organization currently operates with a team of twenty-three employees based primarily out of Chicago and engages a globally diverse Board of Directors. Our goal is to support communities in their fight against hunger and food insecurity through advancing the food banking model. Our 2030 vision is a global network of community-led food banks that serve meals to 50 million people facing hunger. Our team provides best practices, partners and resources to food bank founders and organizations to help them fight hunger more effectively. In the next five years, we are especially aiming to come alongside change-makers in low-income communities, primarily those based in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Opportunity: In less than four years, GFN has grown from a $2m to a $20m+ organization.  During this same time period the organization’s staff has doubled in size.  In the next fiscal year, GFN plans to grow its staff another 50% including two international hires.  GFN is seeking an experienced Human Resources (HR) Director with an entrepreneurial spirit interested in rolling up their sleeves and building a HR function.  This person will have outstanding people skills and have the ability to ensure that our human resources programs and initiatives are effective, efficient, and aligned with the overall organizational objectives. Responsibilities include: Strategy
  • Develop HR plans and strategies to support the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Nurture, promote and reflect a diverse workforce that fosters equity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to understand the organization’s goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Identify key performance indicators for the organizations human resource and talent management functions; assesses the organizations success and market competitiveness based on these metrics.
  • Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures to support effective, inclusive, fair and consistent management of staff throughout the organization
Employee Engagement
  • Provide managers with expert guidance, coaching and support on the full range of people related activities in order to ensure a consistent and fair approach to people management throughout the organization
  • Administers human resource programs including, but not limited to performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Manage, maintain and execute the performance management system, including current job descriptions, standards of performance and performance evaluation instruments.
  • Coach and mentor staff members. Support employee development and enhance job satisfaction.
  • Understand cultural norms, traditions, and working with diverse teams.
  • Recruit full-time, part-time, temporary, contractual and intern personnel both domestically and internationally.
  • Manage full life cycle recruitment (post, source, prescreen, schedule, background, references, offer, on-boarding, off-boarding etc.).
  • Oversee all activities related to employing new staff members outside of the US.
  • Research, develop, and implement competitive compensation, benefits, and employee incentive programs.
  • Research local immigration and labor laws and identify in-country resources such as legal representation, payroll solutions, and employee benefits providers. Manage relationships with all service providers, especially third-party PEOs.
  • Ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (in all countries GFN has employees) and recommended best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Develop and implement benefit programs in a manner that ensures market competitiveness, internal equity among employees and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date personnel files
  • Manage and process payroll. Ensure all monthly payrolls are accurate and have undergone the required approvals and controls.
Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • A deep commitment to the mission of GFN, and a passion for building nonprofits. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • 10+ years of human resource management experience, including active coaching of employees preferably within the nonprofit sector
  • High professionalism, emotional maturity, discretion and strong interpersonal skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work across a diverse team.
  • HR Operations knowledge with the ability to execute while balancing the need of the organization with that of its people
  • Experience supporting a culture that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Experience in global human resources with a special focus on employment practices related to local payroll, health benefits, taxation, statutory holidays, new hires and exits.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of global employment vendors and Professional Employment Organizations.
  • Strong communicator and negotiator, able to work with stakeholders and external partners from a range of cultures.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees Experience supporting an organization with a predominant virtual workforce.
  • Excellent listening, written, and oral skills. 
  • Self-motivation, attention to detail and results-oriented
  • Flexible, energetic, positive, and creative.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; other language proficiency welcomed
